While the book may go into more history and theory than the practitioner needs to know, it does a great job of giving the attitude of ethnographic research rather than just a list of methodologies. While methodologies are important, the author makes it clear that it is more related to a mindset and posture than it is to a list of techniques. Lots of good examples and analogies to help the non-anthropologist understand what he's getting at.
An excellent resource for qualitative research.
Wolcott helpfully distinguishes between doing ethnography and using ethnographic methods and techniques... of course, the line will always be a bit fuzzier than I think he would like!Beautifully written for the ethnographic researcher, this is about reorienting oneself for the task.This is a hefty read - use it for higher level research.
PLEASE NOTE: The Kindle version is NOT the SECOND edition. It is only the FIRST edition, published in 1999! This is a RIP-OFF!!
One of the most enjoyable and readable professional books I've ever owned.
This is a very worthwhile book by the prolific Harry Wolcott. I would like to warn Kindle buyers though that the edition for the Kindle is the 1999 one. It does say this if you scroll down, but the photo is of the 2008 edition, which is what I thought I was getting. I already have the 1999 one and wanted the newer one. Amazon has been deceptive here; obviously not a fault of the book or the author.
The book itself is very interesting. Too bad it was delivered in bad shape...
